FLORENCE, Italy (Mar. 21) –The Central Washington University volleyball team played its first exhibition match against Italian opponents, during their international trip, against Liberi & Forti 1914.

Liberi & Forti 1914 claimed the match in four sets.  Prior to the match, the Wildcats spent most of the day exploring the medieval town of Siena, tucked into the hills of Northern Italy.

"To be able visit Sienna and then to play a competitive volleyball match in one day pretty much defines why we are doing this, CWU Head Coach Mario Andaya said afterward.  "To experience something so amazing like Sienna and to turn around and play a competitive volleyball match in Florence was truly awesome."

The Wildcats stormed out of the gate in the first set, led by senior Kiah Jones and junior Sabrina Wheelhouse.  Central's block was tough as always and the Italians struggled to find a groove.  Key kills from the Wildcats helped CWU claim the opening set victory.

"Our match was competitive which is what we want to experience," Andaya added.  "We looked very good at times which is exciting for the upcoming year, but for now we are enjoying getting to play international competition and rules, while expanding our total volleyball experience."

Young players like Kassidy MalcolmMakenna SmithHannah Lasche, and Taylor Martin saw valuable playtime against a high-quality opponent.

The Italians fought their way back, levelling the match at a set a piece.  After claiming set three, a tight battle ensued during the fourth set.  The Wildcats claimed an 11-8 lead, but the Italians endured and levelled the score.  A see-saw battle erupted and the Italians were able to sneak away with the fourth set and the victory.

"Meeting other players and coaches, and sharing our different cultures with each other is our purpose and today was truly one for the books," Andaya finished.  "To see how they sing their national anthem and how Italy enjoys athletics is just amazing."

Following the Star Spangled Banner, prior to the match, Liberi & Forti 1914 and their fans sung a spirited rendition of Il Canto degli Italiani, the Italian national anthem.

After the match concluded, the teams joined together for photos and an opportunity to mingle and share experiences.

The Wildcats are back in action tomorrow (Mar. 22) at 8:30 p.m. is against Palovallo Nottolini of Serie B.  The match begins at 8:00 p.m. UTC+1 (12:00 p.m. PST).
